Bruges was a like a winter wonderland (minus the snow).

By the time we reached Bruges we both had begun to feel a little under the weather. Since we started moving north, the days have only gotten colder and, unfortunately, that wasn't too good for our health. Luckily we stayed in a good quality Airbnb. Gulden Vlies was our abode. A mansion from the 1850's converted into an adorable boutique bed and breakfast. Not only did it have a very comfortable fluffy bed, but also a wonderful homemade breakfast every morning. Despite my aversion to waking up before 10, I dragged myself- bed-head and all- down to the art-deco breakfast room every morning for a fresh croissant, because damn it, that's what's life's all about, isn't it!?

Everywhere in Bruges is captivating. The crow-stepped gables are particularly characteristic of Bruges and look to me like thin staircases that line each house. Since this place is so picturesque I can definitely imagine the steeped gables are actually staircases climbing up to invisible sky doors that might lead to other worlds entirely.

Food wise, of course, we treated ourselves to chocolate, beer and waffles because what else are you supposed to eat in Belgium.

We also visited a Salvador Dali exhibit and enjoyed the surrealism in his works. Ironically enough I felt Bruges was exceptionally surreal, but with whimsical undertones instead of the bizzare darker expressions of Dali.

Belfry Tower, and Basilica of the Holy Blood were both great to see, but my favorite moment in Bruges was just sitting on the fire escape of our hotel looking out at the city. This city has survived war and invasive occupation and yet here it stands. These classic old buildings have survived in defiance of a world that is consistently prone to destruction. I feel kindred with this little city, while the adversity in my life hasn't been as expansive as a place like this, it has been mine to experience. And I'm glad we're both here enjoying a sunset together, me and this little well built town.

In a fairytale!
